Sacred Heart Services on South First Street at Alma in San Jose
St. Mary’s has a long history of charitable outreach through Sacred Heart Community Services. A dedicated core of our parishioners volunteer their time and talent at Sacred Heart in order to live their Catholic faith by feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, and welcoming the stranger.
Sacred Heart is located at located at the intersection of Alma and South First Street in San Jose. Over 1,500 individuals walk through the doors of Sacred Heart daily to find help. They can find food at Louise’s Pantry (named after the agency’s original founder, Louise Benson, whose daughter is a member of our parish); clothing (donated by parishioners throughout the diocese); educational and legal assistance. Sacred Heart also provides information and referral in collaboration with other human service agencies in the community.
St. Mary’s contributes financially to Sacred Heart through our monthly Share-A-Meal program, and materially through our Christmas Giving Tree, and Lenten Layette collections. We also collect travel soaps and toiletries on an ongoing basis for Sacred Heart to distribute to homeless clients. You can drop off toiletries in the covered plastic bin labeled “Sacred Heart” in front of the Pastoral Ministries Office.
