Music at St. Mary's
Music Notes
by Corliss Greene
Years ago, I went to a concert at the Mountain Winery featuring several gospel groups, with Al Green featured as the headliner. Al was in his glory. He was so full of joy, that I found myself with tears in my eyes. But the greatest thing about the concert was the choir. They were in their element, moving together, songs perfectly syncopated, and voices raised in great excitement and conviction. I felt that that concert was one of the most profound worship experiences I have ever had.
I think the reason the choir thrilled me more than the famous star was that the choir is an ensemble - a group of people expressing the same thoughts and prayers. You know the verse, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”. As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, there’s safety in numbers. But not only is there safety, there’s strength. God made his presence known. The ensembles in this church meet with one mind and enhance your worship experience with their sung prayers. Wouldn’t you like to be a part of that?
There are opportunities for parishioners to participate in the music ministry here at St. Mary’s. Here are some fun facts for you to know...the Adult choir that sings at the 11:15 Mass each week has members who are experienced musicians, as well as about 50% of their membership who DO NOT READ MUSIC!!! We rehearse on Wednesday evenings. Don’t let your lack of experience keep you from expressing yourself musically here at St. Mary’s. We would love to have you try us on for size. Come Wednesday and rehearse with the choir. We are looking forward to the contribution you will make to our numbers!
